I still remember how it all started.
Both of us had been planning our wedding for like 2 years, how we wanted it to be a very small intimate affair between our immediate families. Thousands of plans changed, starting from our parents wanting it to be a Big Fat Indian Wedding, us telling them for it to be a small scale one, for it to be done during Christmas holidays so that whole of the family could attend, or in April during Easter holidays, or December 2020, or the year 2021. Trust me, nothing was easy. Then, of course, Hindu rituals play the most important role in our Indian’s lives. For some reason, if it wasn’t done then, we couldn’t marry each other till 2021, and we were not ready to wait! And even if it had to be 2019, it had to be before 12th of December, so then we end up with a date approximately 40 days before the wedding date which was, 11th of December. Now, we had 40 days to arrange the wedding venue, decor, photographers, makeup artists, outfits and most of all to get the whole of the family to be there. Again, it wasn’t easy, everyone wanted the wedding to be arranged according to their schedules when they were available. Honestly, it was very difficult for our parents to stick to their guns and start preparing. Both of our families were panicking because it was the first wedding from both sides, and they didn’t know what to do and how to do, because all the weddings they had heard of were planned for months and years to come into action. Yes, it was a unique wedding because everything was done in a day, it was more like a marathon to get it done with.
I don’t know about anyone else, but on my D-day, I wasn’t nervous, I wasn’t scared at all, I was just happy I’m getting married to the person I love and I want to spend my entire life with. Even when the ‘Laavan phere’ ended, the first thing that came out of my mouth was, “We’re marriedddddddd” with a big smile on my face.
When I look back at it today, honestly, I have no regrets that we did it that way and I’m glad our parents took that decision and that it happened at that moment, otherwise things wouldn’t have been as they are today and everything would have been delayed further because of COVID-19.
